Virtual Dementia Tour

Experience first-hand what it’s like to have dementia by signing up for a 15 minute session.  During a Virtual Dementia Tour experience, trained facilitators guide participants outfitted with patented devices that alter their senses while they try to complete common everyday tasks and exercises. The Tour enables caregivers to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges those with dementia face, and use the experience to provide better person-centered care. Come to our free open house to experience this for yourself!

Featured Speakers

2:00 pm – Avoiding Conflict, by Deb Nygaard

Learn tangible, hands-on ways to minimize negative interactions with your loved-one who has dementia.  This is not Dementia 101.  You will leave with tools to use either now or in the future, and have an opportunity to ask your own individual questions.

Deb is the Director of Development with Arthur’s Senior Care.  She has 27 years of experience working with people with memory impairment, and her passion is helping families to find peace of mind.  Deb is a certified trainer of Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach Methods, as well as the Virtual Dementia Tour, held at every free open house.

3:30 pm – When to Consider a Move, Family Panel

Moving is a very personal decision, and it’s helpful to hear how others reached their conclusions.  Hear from family members who’ve tried several housing and care options for their aging parents or spouse.  There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

5:00 pm – Honor Flights, with Jana Kyser

An Honor Flight is conducted by non-profit organizations dedicated to transporting as many United States military veterans as possible to see the memorials of the respective war they fought in Washington, DC, at no cost to the veterans.  Hear from our local chapter how they help veterans to enjoy one last tour with honor.

7:00 pm – Balancing Medications, by Dr. Pett-Taylor

Dr. Heather Pett-Taylor, is a Bluestone Physician.  Together, we will tackle the difficult topic of balancing medication use to help loved ones walk the tightrope between behavior challenges such as anxiety or combativeness with the side effects of medications such as sleepiness and lack of interest.  From the sidelines we watch our loved ones suffer on both sides of this issue, staff/care givers and family suffer too.  How can we decide when to use medications, which medications are appropriate and how do we advocate for those we love or care for so they are as healthy and comfortable as possible.

Things to look forward to:

  • 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm Chipotle Dinner is available!
  • Treats available all night long!
  • Elder Care Consultations available by appointment with Deb Nygaard.

We’ll see you there!
